GreenFirst Forest Products Inc. announced a revised operating schedule in response to ongoing challenges in the softwood lumber market. The company explained that current conditions have necessitated reduced production to align with weak demand. As part of this decision, three of its four sawmills will be temporarily shut down. The affected plants are located in Hearst, Kapuskasing, and Cochrane, Canada. The temporary closure will last for three weeks, from December 22, 2025, to January 9, 2026. Management confirmed that the softwood lumber market continues to face significant price and demand pressures. The company indicated that weak demand in North America has exacerbated the crisis. Tariffs and duties, which can reach up to 45% on Canadian lumber, have also played a major role in the market downturn. This move is part of a broader trend of production cuts across the lumber industry to balance supply and demand. GreenFirst affirmed that it will continue to monitor market developments and adjust production plans to support sustainability.
